About
Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City boasts artificial turf soccer fields that offer spectacular views of the Midtown Manhattan skyline, making for a truly memorable playing experience. The park itself is a landmark of waterfront revitalization, built on what was once an industrial rail yard and a dock for barges carrying goods across the East River. Its most distinctive features are the preserved gantry cranes, which once loaded and unloaded rail car floats, serving as powerful reminders of the area's rich industrial past. These massive structures, for which the park is named, offer a unique historical backdrop to the modern recreational facilities. The transformation from a working waterfront to a public park began in the late 20th century, with the first phase of Gantry Plaza State Park opening in 1998, followed by expansions. The soccer fields are generally well-maintained and popular for both league play and casual use, and are usually well-lit for evening games. Access is very convenient via subway (7 to Vernon Blvd-Jackson Ave or Hunters Point Ave; G to 21st Street-Van Alst). The surrounding park environment is beautifully landscaped, with piers and green spaces, offering numerous amenities and a strong connection to both history and stunning urban vistas.
